As the really funny part of
American Idol comes to a close, the weeding out of the bad performers from the good ones begin. True, there are some humorous moments during this next trimming down of contestants, but more often than not, it just becomes unbearably awkward at times. Those that made it to Hollywood (dawg), really think they have what it takes to become the next American Idol; unfortunately many of them just had a really good audition and absolutely suck when they are really pressed and stretched to their vocal limits. That is when it becomes “watch through your fingers” TV; you really want to witness the train-wreck unfolding in front of you, but also want the ability to quickly make it all go away if it gets too tortuous.

This next stage is also where the judges start to become angry with the contestants and more importantly, with each other. Maybe the singer they were hopeful would shine in this part of the contest doesn’t do so well or the critiques and direction the judge provides in an effort to coach someone is ignored. Those things always cause tempers to flare and verbal barbs to be slung. For the viewers the feuds are usually pretty entertaining, though sometimes really uncomfortable. But honestly, that is why we watch, to see people suffer in a way, to know our lives, at that moment, are slightly better than theirs.

One reoccurring theme I have noticed this year has been peoples love of Simon. True, during the years, there has been the odd fan that liked Simon, but most cursed simply his name as they walked away witout their golden ticket. This year though the Simon fans have come out of the woodwork, every episode has two or three people who want to fuck him right there in front of everyone. I personally do not find him physically attractive in the least, though his personality is pretty cool. He is the “bad boy” of the group, he says what he wants because he doesn’t follow the rules, maaaaaan. Sure, some of his insults can be pretty lame, but he says them with a straight face, and that is totally respectable.
